Upper Control Arms

Bushing Replacement



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushings, as follows:

    Pry up the bushing flange, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Press the bushing(s) from the upper control arm, using a shop press and tools 09613-26010, 09631-20060 and 09950-00020
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Press the bushings into the control arm until the bushing flange contacts the housing edge of the control arm, using a shop press, a steel plate and tools 09631-12090 and 09710-30021
  4.  
  5. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the control arm bushings, as follows:

    Pry up the bushing flange, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Press the bushing(s) from the upper control arm, using a shop press and tools 09613-26010, 09631-20060 and 09950-00020
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Lubricate the new control arm bushings with liquid soap.
  2.  
  3. Press the bushings into the control arm until the bushing flange contacts the housing edge of the control arm, using a shop press, a steel plate and tools 09631-12090 and 09710-30021
  4.  
  5. Install the upper control arm to the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
  8.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Strut
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
     

  4.  
  5. Upper ball joint, as follows:

    Cotter pin and loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the upper control arm, using tool 09950-40011
     
    Steering knuckle, support it securely
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     

  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 clips and the fender apron seal
     
    Brake/fuel line clamp nut and clamp
     
    Both upper control arm-to-chassis nuts/bolts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Torque both upper control arm-to-chassis nuts/bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
     
    Brake/fuel line clamp nut and clamp. Torque the clamp nut to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). Torque it to 71 inch lbs. (8.0 Nm).
     
    Strut
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
  4.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Shock absorber
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)
     

  8.  
  9. Upper ball joint, as follows:

    Cotter pin and loosen the nut
     
    Upper ball joint from the upper control arm, using tool 09950-40011
     
    Steering knuckle, support it securely
     
    Upper ball joint nut
     

  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    4 clips and the fender apron seal
     
    Brake/fuel line clamp nut and clamp
     
    Both upper control arm-to-chassis nuts/bolts
     
    Upper control arm
     

  12.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Upper control arm. Torque both upper control arm-to-chassis nuts/bolts to 72 ft. lbs. (98 Nm).
     
    Brake/fuel line clamp nut and clamp. Torque the clamp nut to 49 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).
     
    Fender apron seal
     
    Upper ball joint. Torque the nut to 77 ft. lbs. (105 Nm).
     
    New cotter pin
     
    Steering knuckle
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness, if equipped with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). Torque it to 71 inch lbs. (8.0 Nm).
     
    Shock absorber
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
