Pinion Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential housing oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the companion flange, as follows:

    Loosen the staked part of the nut, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Companion flange nut, using tool 09330-00021
     
    Companion flange, using tools 09950-30011 and 09954-03010
     
    Oil seal, using tool 09308-10010
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the new oil seal until it is flush with the housing, using a plastic hammer and tools 09316-12010 and 09649-17010
  2.  


NOTE
Use vinyl tape to connect both oil seal installation tools.

  1. Install the companion flange, as follows:

    Companion flange
     
    New nut, lubricated with hypoid gear oil
     
    Torque the nut to 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm), using tool 09330-00021.

  3. Adjust the drive pinion preload
  4.  
  5. Rotate the drive pinion, using a torque wrench while tightening the flange nut to make sure the bearing preload is 11.4-16.7 inch lbs. (1.3-1.9 Nm) for a new bearing or 4.3-6.9 inch lbs. (0.5-0.8 Nm) for a used bearing. Tighten the flange nut to achieve the preload torque readings originally recorded.

CAUTION
Never loosen the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload.

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Drive pinion nut, stake it
     
    Rear driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).

  3. Refill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks; 3.33 qts. for 2WD or 3.12 qts. for 4WD.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the differential housing oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the companion flange, as follows:

    Loosen the staked part of the nut, using a chisel and a hammer
     
    Companion flange nut, using tool 09330-00021
     
    Companion flange, using tools 09950-30011 and 09954-03010
     
    Oil seal, using tool 09308-10010
     

  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the new oil seal until it is flush with the housing, using a plastic hammer and tools 09316-12010 and 09649-17010
    NOTE
    Use vinyl tape to connect both oil seal installation tools.

  3. Install the companion flange, as follows:

    Companion flange
     
    New nut, lubricated with hypoid gear oil
     
    Torque the nut to 109 ft. lbs. (147 Nm), using tool 09330-00021.

  5. Adjust the drive pinion preload
  6.  
  7. Rotate the drive pinion, using a torque wrench while tightening the flange nut to make sure the bearing preload is 11.4-16.7 inch lbs. (1.3-1.9 Nm) for a new bearing or 4.3-6.9 inch lbs. (0.5-0.8 Nm) for a used bearing. On 2005-2006 vehicles with LSD, 5.3-8.0 inch lbs. (0.6-0.9 Nm) for a used bearing. Tighten the flange nut to achieve the preload torque readings originally recorded.
    CAUTION
    Never loosen the pinion nut to reduce bearing preload.

  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Drive pinion nut, stake it
     
    Rear driveshaft. Tighten the fasteners to 54 ft. lbs. (74 Nm) on 2001-2004 vehicles and to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm).
     

  10.  
  11. Refill the differential with gear lubricant and check for leaks.
  12.
