Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front wheel speed sensor, sensor harness, and harness bracket from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Install the front wheel speed sensor assembly to the steering knuckle.
  2.  
  3. Install the retaining bolt and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the front wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Use a suitable scan tool to perform a diagnostic system check-ABS.
  12.  

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the rear wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining bolts and the rear wheel speed sensor from the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Inspect for the following on the sensor face:

    Inspect for an accumulation of metallic particles, dirt, grease, or other contaminants
     
    Clean the sensor as required
     

  10.  
  11. Inspect the sensor face for evidence of damage. Inspect the sensor for contact with the toothed sensor ring. The sensor should not contact the toothed sensor ring. Determine and correct the cause of the damage when damage is evident.
  12.  
  13. Replace the sensor if damage interferes with proper operation.
  14.  
  15. Inspect the axle bearing for excessive wear.

To install:


WARNING
The wheel speed sensor is a tight fit and is to be pushed in by hand. DO NOT force the sensor into position, as damage to the sensor could result.

  1. Install the rear wheel speed sensor assembly into the axle housing.
    WARNING
    Wheel speed sensors must be given an anti corrosion coating before installation to prevent corrosion. Use silicone grease P/N 12345579 or equivalent.

  2.  
  3. Install the wheel speed sensor retaining bolt and tighten to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Use a suitable scan tool to perform a diagnostic system check-ABS.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.
