Ignition Coil

Removal & Installation



1.6L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Carefully release the number 1 spark plug wire from the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the number 1 spark plug wire from the number 1-4 ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the number 3 spark plug wire from the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 bolts from each ignition coil.
  12.  
  13. Remove the ignition coils.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coils.
  2.  
  3. Install the 2 bolts to each ignition coil and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the number 1 spark plug wire to the number 1-4 ignition coil.
  6.  
  7. Install the number 3 spark plug wire to the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  8.  
  9. Carefully secure the number 1 spark plug wire in the clip on the number 2-3 ignition coil.
  10.  
  11. Connect the ignition coil electrical connectors.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolt for each coil.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the ignition coil. Secure with the bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the ignition coil connectors.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two fasteners and the ignition coil cover from the valve cover.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
  8.  
  9. Pull up in order to remove the ignition coil.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install ignition coil into the valve cover.
  2.  
  3. Secure the ignition coil to the engine with the retaining bolt and tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector.
  6.  
  7. Install the ignition coil cover to the valve cover.
  8.  
  9. Secure the ignition coil cover with the two fasteners and tighten to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12.  

Testing



  1. Remove the ignition coil(s).
  2.  
  3. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the primary terminals on the underside of the coil. The resistance should be 0.50-0.90 ohms.
  4.  
  5. Check the resistance between the secondary terminals. It should be 4000-10,000 ohms.
  6.  
  7. If the coil failed either test, replace the coil.
  8.
