Flywheel or Flexplate & Ring Gear

Removal & Installation



1.6L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc from the flywheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the 6 flywheel retaining bolts.
  6.  
  7. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Apply GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads.
  4.  
  5. Install the flywheel retaining bolts (1) to the flywheel and tighten them to 58 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the pressure plate and clutch disc to the flywheel.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission to the vehicle.
  10.  

2.0L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped vehicles.
  4.  
  5. Inspect the ring gear. Replace the flywheel if the ring gear is damaged, cracked or worn.
  6.  
  7. Inspect the clutch disc contact surface on manual transmission equipped vehicles. Replace the flywheel if the surface is damaged or excessively worn.
  8.  
  9. Measure the flywheel face runout using a Dial Indicator Set J 8001 with a Magnetic Base J 26900-13. Replace the flywheel if the runout exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0078 in)
  10.  
  11. Mark the flywheel-to-engine position.
  12.  
  13. Lock the flywheel in place with the Flywheel Holder J 35271.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 8 flywheel retaining bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  18.  
  19. Inspect the clutch pilot bushing. Replace if necessary.
  20.  
  21. Clean the grease and dirt from the flywheel outer surfaces using a suitable solvent.
  22.  

To install:

  1. Align the flywheel-to-engine marks and install the flywheel to the crankshaft.
  2.  
  3. Apply GM P/N 12345493, or the equivalent, to the flywheel retaining bolt threads.
  4.  
  5. Install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft. Use the J 35271 to lock the flywheel. Cross tighten the 8 flywheel retaining bolts to 51 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped vehicles.
  8.  
  9. Install the transmission assembly.
  10.  

2.5L Engine
  1. Remove the transmission assembly.
  2.  
  3. Inspect the ring gear. Replace the flywheel if the ring gear is damaged, cracked or worn.
  4.  
  5. Measure the flywheel face runout using a Dial Indicator Set J 8001 with a Magnetic Base J 26900-13. Replace the flywheel if the runout exceeds 0.2 mm (0.0078 in)
  6.  
  7. Mark the flywheel-to-engine position.
  8.  
  9. Lock the flywheel in place with the Flywheel Holder J 35271.
  10.  
  11. Remove the 8 flywheel retaining bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. Clean the grease and dirt from the flywheel outer surfaces using a suitable solvent.

  1. Align the flywheel-to-engine marks and install the flywheel to the crankshaft.

  7. Install the transmission assembly.
