Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle at the frame with a hoist or jackstand.
  4.  
  5. Use a floor jack in order to support the rear axle housing.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear wheels.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the park brake cable hanger from the frame. Disconnect the clamp from the cross member.
  10.  
  11. Remove the lower nut and bolt from the shock absorber.
  12.  
  13. If the vehicle has ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor clamps from the upper control arm and the axle housing.
  14.  
  15. Remove the E-ring from the right rear brake pipe.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the breather hose from the axle housing.
  18.  
  19. Lower the rear axle housing gradually as far down as necessary in order to remove the coil spring.

To install:


NOTE
When seating the coil spring, mate the spring end with the stepped part of the rear axle spring seat.

  1. Install the coil spring on the spring seat of the axle housing. Raise the axle housing.
    NOTE
    DO NOT tighten the fasteners before lowering the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tires and wheels before tightening the fasteners.

  3. Install the shock absorber lower bolt and the nut.
  4.  
  5. If the vehicle has ABS, install the wheel speed sensor clamps.
  6.  
  7. Install the E-ring to the right rear brake pipe.
  8.  
  9. Connect the breather hose to the axle housing.
  10.  
  11. Connect the park brake cable hanger to the chassis frame and clamp the hanger to the cross member.
  12.  
  13. Remove the floor jack from the axle housing.
  14.  
  15. Install the rear wheels.
  16.  
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. With the weight of the vehicle on the tires and wheels, tighten the nut and the bolt.
  20.  
  21. Tighten the nut and the bolt to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm) for 2000-01 models; 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) for 2002-04 models.
  22.  

  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle securely on jackstands.
  2.  
  3. If the vehicle is equipped with ABS, disconnect the wheel speed sensor clamp from the left upper control arm.
  4.  
  5. Remove the upper control arm.
  6.  

To install:


WARNING
DO NOT tighten the upper control arm bolts before lowering the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tires and wheels before tightening the nuts and bolts. If the vehicle has ABS, the front of the upper control arm must be toward the front of the vehicle.

  1. Install the upper control arm and the bolt to the chassis frame and to the axle housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the following components to the axle housing:
    1. The upper control arm
    2.  
    3. The bolt
    4.  
    5. The nut
    6.

  5. If the vehicle has ABS, connect the wheel speed sensor harness clamp to the upper control arm.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. With the weight of the vehicle on the tires and wheels, tighten the bolts and nuts to 65 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
