Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SIR System, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical Section.
  4.  
  5. If you are NOT removing the steering column, ensure the front wheels and tires are in the straight ahead position
  6.  
  7. Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering shaft nut. Use paint in order to place match marks on the steering wheel and on the steering shaft. Use these marks as a guide during installation.
    NOTE
    Do not use any steering wheel puller or side screws other than those recommended as the SIR coil assembly is easily damaged if the correct tools are not used.

  11. Use Steering Wheel Puller tool J 1859-A in order to remove the steering wheel.

To install:

  1. If you did NOT replace the steering column, ensure that the front wheels and tires are in the straight ahead position.
  2.  
  3. If you replaced the steering column, ensure that the front wheels and tires did not move.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, center the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil.
  6.  
  7. If you are replacing the steering wheel, use paint in order to place match marks on the new steering wheel in the same position as on the old steering wheel.
    NOTE
    When installing the steering wheel, ensure that the 2 tabs on the SIR coil align with the 2 slots on the steering wheel mounting surface. Failure to align the tabs may cause incorrect alignment of some components during installation. This may damage the SIR coil.

  9. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft. Fit the 2 tabs on the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil into the 2 slots in the back of the steering wheel. Align the marks on the steering wheel and on the steering shaft.

  11. Ensure the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position when the tires and wheels are in the straight ahead position.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering shaft nut and tighten to 23.5 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the inflatable restraint steering wheel module to the steering wheel.
  16.  
  17. Enable the SIR system.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.
