Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Center the steering wheel and lock it in position.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable.
     
    Universal joint from the gear box
     
    Front tires
     
    Tie rod from the knuckle using Special Tool 09568-34000 or equivalent
     
    Engine splash guard
     
    Front muffler
     
    Pressure and return hoses from the gear box
     
    Pressure and return hose brackets
     
    Gear box mounting clamp and bolts
     

  8.  
  9. Pull the gear box assembly toward the right side of the vehicle and remove.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Gear box assembly in from the right side of the vehicle
     
    Gear box mounting clamp and bolts. Tighten bolts to: 66-81 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm)
     
    Pressure and return hose clamps
     
    Pressure and return hoses into the gear box. Tighten to: 84-132 inch lbs. (10-16 Nm)
     
    Front muffler
     
    Engine splash guard
     
    Tie rod to the knuckle and tighten to: 18-25 ft. lbs. (24-34 Nm)
     
    Front tires
     
    Steering box assembly to the universal joint assembly
     
    Negative battery cable

  3. Fill the power steering system to the correct level with the appropriate fluid type.
  4.  
  5. Bleed the power steering system.
  6.  
  7. Check the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
