REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
All Except VR6 Engine

The crankshaft pulley/vibration damper is bolted onto the crankshaft timing belt drive sprocket and can be removed without removal of the high torque central bolt. The pulley/vibration damper may have to be removed to remove the timing belt covers on some models, and must be removed to replace the camshaft timing belt on all models equipped with a timing belt and/or to access the crankshaft timing belt drive sprocket.

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. On 1990-96 Passat models, detach the wheel well splash shield if it interferes with damper removal.
  4.  
  5. If necessary, remove the lower engine shield.
  6.  
  7. If necessary, on A4 & 1998-00 Passat models, place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  8.  
  9. Loosen each crankshaft damper bolt 1 / 4 of a turn. Do NOT loosen or remove the center crankshaft damper bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove crankshaft driven accessory drive belt(s).
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft damper bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the crankshaft damper.
