The front suspension installed on 1990-97 Passat models consists of two lower control arms that are mounted to and pivot from an underbody mounted subframe. The control arms are mounted to the steering knuckle via bolted-on ball joints and the steering knuckle is bolted onto the strut assembly. The strut assembly is a shock absorber and a spring perch combined into one unit and is used as the upper pivot point of the front suspension and to support the weight of the vehicle. The upper portion of the strut assembly is attached to the vehicle's reinforced inner fender well, which is a structural portion of the vehicle's frame.
The following fasteners for the 1990-97 Passat subframe assembly may not be present in the parts replacement information.

Though very similar, there are two versions of the front suspension installed on 1993-97 Passat models depending on the horsepower output of the originally installed engine. The "Base" suspension is installed on models if the original engine horsepower is less than 148 hp (110 kW). The "Plus" suspension is installed on all models having an engine output that exceeds 148 hp (110 kW), such as models with the VR6 engine.
The differences between the base and plus suspension include the following components:
The front suspension installed on A4 and 1998-00 Passat models is similar to the previous Passat models except that the strut is not used as an upper pivot point, instead two separate upper control arms, each with their own ball joint are used. This suspension system offers much improved straight-line stability, and improved cornering control especially on uneven road surfaces.
The Vehicle Data Label located in the spare tire wheel well and in the vehicle maintenance guide, contains valuable information about the vehicle and the options installed during production. Beginning with model year 1998 the spring and shock assemblies installed on the vehicle during production were classified by weight codes and reflected on this label.
- Installed options include including optional suspension components and/or handling packages installed during production.
