FLUID RECOMMENDATIONS

NOTE
The part numbers provided in the following information could change without notice and are provided only as a reference. Always consult your local dealer for the correct lubricant for your vehicle.

The manual transaxles are equipped from the manufacturer with SAE 75 W90 synthetic oil. The manufacturer does not specify a maintenance interval for manual transaxle oil. If the transmission has been exposed to severe use or used most of its life for towing, an oil change may be in order.

If changing the fluid, use only an approved fluid that meets the standards of the manufacturer. The original fluid is referred to as Gear oil G Part No. G 052 911 A. Using the correct fluid is imperative and your local dealer should be consulted on the current recommendations from the manufacturer.

Even if you choose not to change the oil in your vehicle's manual transaxle, it is important to make sure the level is correct. A low oil level indicates leakage, and an over-full level may indicate excessive condensation/moisture in the oil. Check the fluid level as recommended in the maintenance intervals suggested by the manufacturer.

LEVEL CHECK
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Position a drain container under the oil filler plug.
  4.
  5. On 1990-97 Passat models use a 17mm Allen® wrench to the oil filler plug.
  6.
  7. On Audi A4 and 1998-00 Passat models, use a splined type tool to remove the filler plug.
  8.
  9. If the transmission is over-full, allow the oil to drain from the filler plug opening until it stops.
  10.
  11. Make sure the fluid level is even with the edge of the hole. If the level is low, add oil as required.
  12.
  13. Install and tighten the plug.

DRAIN AND REFILL
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the car on jackstands.
  2.
  3. Slide drain pan under the transaxle.
  4.
  5. On 1990-97 Passat models use a 17mm hex wrench on the oil filler plug.
  6.
  7. On Audi A4 and 1998-00 Passat models, use a splined type tool to remove the filler plug.
  8.
  9. Using the same wrench, loosen the drain plug until it can be turned by hand.
  10.
  11. While pushing in on the drain plug, turn it counterclockwise until it is free of the threads on the transaxle case. Then, quickly pull the drain plug away, and allow the oil to drain into the pan.
  12.

NOTE
A small amount of fine particles on the drain plug's magnet is considered normal. If large metal chunks may indicate problems with the internal components of the transaxle.

  1. When the oil has been completely drained, install the drain plug. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs.
  2.
  3. Refill the gearbox (using the proper type and viscosity of gear oil) up to the level of the filler plug, until a small amount of oil drips from the threads.
  4.
  5. Install and tighten the filler plug to 18 ft. lbs.
  6.
