REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1990-93 2.0L Passat Models
  1. Remove instrument cluster.
  2.  
  3. Remove the instrument cluster cover mounting screws and remove the cover.
  4.  
  5. To remove the left or right gauge assembly, squeeze the locating pins at the upper and lower corner, opposite from one another and pull the gauge from the assembly.
  6.  
  7. To remove the center gauge (speedometer), remove the mounting fasteners, then pull the gauge from the assembly.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in reverse order of removal, making sure to carefully guide the connectors on the back of the gauge(s) into the electrical connectors on the printed circuit board.

1993-97 2.8L /1995-96 2.0L Passat Models
  1. Remove instrument cluster.
  2.  
  3. Pull out the trip odometer reset button and remove the instrument cluster cover mounting screws and remove the cover.
  4.  
  5. To remove the left or right gauge assembly, carefully pull the gauge from the assembly.
  6.  
  7. If the center gauge (speedometer) is a mechanical (cable driven) gauge, remove the mounting fasteners, then pull the gauge from the assembly.
  8.  
  9. If the center gauge (speedometer) is an electronic gauge, carefully pull the gauge from the assembly.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in reverse order of removal, making sure to carefully guide the connectors on the back of the gauge(s) into the electrical connectors on the printed circuit board.

1998-00 Passat Models

The instrument clusters installed on these models are one of 2 types and distinguished by the instrument lighting color, either green or blue.

On models with green instrumentation, only the control light bulbs are replaceable. Should any other failure occur, the instrument cluster must be replaced.

On models with blue instrumentation, none of the components are replaceable. Should a failure occur, the instrument cluster must be replaced.

1996-00 A4 Models

On instrument clusters installed on these models, only the control light bulbs are replaceable. Should any other failure occur, the instrument cluster must be replaced.
