REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
All Wheel Drive (AWD) Vehicles
1998-00 passat models

Upper Control Arm

To remove the upper control arm, proceed as follows:

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control arm-to-subframe fasteners.
  8.  
  9. Remove the control arm-to-bearing housing fastener.
  10.  
  11. Remove the control arm.
  12.  
  13. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:
  14.  
  15. Install the control arm using new fasteners and torque as follows:
  16.  
    1. Tighten the control arm-to-subframe to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Tighten the control arm-to-bearing housing in 2 steps:
    4.  
    5. Step 1: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Step 2: 90° ( 1 / 4 turn)
    8.  


Lower Control Arm

To remove the lower control arm, proceed as follows:

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the wheel speed sensor wiring from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable bracket, and then remove the control arm bolt near the bracket.
  10.  
  11. Depress the parking brake retaining bracket tabs inward and slide the cable out of the control arm.
  12.  


WARNING
Do NOT pull the parking brake cable, otherwise the parking brake adjustment will be affected.

  1. Remove the track rod to bearing housing fastener.
  2.  
  3. Matchmark the rear camber eccentric washer to the control arm, then remove the fastener and remove the control arm.
  4.  
  5. Installation is in reverse order of removal, Note the following:
  6.  
    1. Install new fasteners and torque as follows:
    2.  
    3. Tighten the control arm-to-subframe retainers in 2 steps:
    4.  
    5. Step 1: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    6.  
    7. Step 2: 90° ( 1 / 4 turn)
    8.  
    9. Tighten the control arm-to-bearing housing to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    10.  
    11. Tighten the strut-to-control arm retainers in 2 steps:
    12.  
    13. Step 1: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    14.  
    15. Step 2: 90° ( 1 / 4 turn)
    16.  
    17. Upon completion, test drive the vehicle. If the steering wheel is not longer centered, check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
    18.  
    19. Check the parking brake operation and adjustment, and adjust as necessary.
    20.

Upper Control Arm

To remove the upper control arm, refer to the rear strut removal procedures. proceed as follows:

Lower Control Arm

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ABS speed sensor cable from the control arm.
  8.  
  9. Drain the brake hydraulic fluid into a suitable container.
  10.  
  11. Place a suitable container beneath the line and disconnect the brake line at the metal line to flexible line junction near the brake caliper.
  12.  
  13. Remove the strut-to-control arm mounting fastener.
  14.  
  15. Remove the parking brake cable.
  16.  
  17. Matchmark the rear camber eccentric washer to the control arm, then remove the fastener.
  18.  
  19. Remove the control arm-to-subframe mounting fasteners, then remove the control arm.
  20.  
  21. Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
  22.  
    1. Install new fasteners and torque the control arm-to-strut in 2 steps:
    2.  
    3. Step 1: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    4.  
    5. Step 2: 90° ( 1 / 4 turn)
    6.  
    7. Tighten the control arm-to-subframe in 2 steps:
    8.  
    9. Step 1: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
    10.  
    11. Step 2: 90° ( 1 / 4 turn)
    12.  
    13. Tighten the control arm-to-bearing housing eccentric adjuster to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    14.  
    15. Bleed the brake system.
    16.  
    17. Check and adjust the alignment as necessary.
