REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION
Some models covered by this guide may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS. Handling of the SRS components requires extreme care. Special tools are also required. If in doubt, see a qualified service technician to ensure proper removal and installation of air bag system components.

1990-97 Passat Models
  1. Remove the center steering wheel trim or if equipped, the SRS air bag assembly, then remove the steering wheel. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Steering Wheel, Removal and Installation.

  3. Remove the 3 screws securing the switch assemblies to the steering column.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the switch assemblies.
  6.  
  7. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

1998-00 Passat Models
  1. Remove the SRS air bag assembly, then the steering wheel. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Steering Wheel, Removal and Installation.

  3. Remove the Phillips fasteners near the outer edges of the lower column cover, and then remove the upper cover by carefully lifting it upward.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hex bolt from the lower left side of the lower column cover, and then remove the Phillips fasteners from the lower right and the front of the cover.
  6.  
  7. Fully release the column height adjustment lever and dislodge the lower trim cover and lower it.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the hex head bolt securing the switches, then disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the switches.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

A4 Models
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the SRS air bag assembly. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Steering Wheel, Removal and Installation.

  5. Adjust the steering column fully out and fully down.
  6.  
  7. Remove the Phillips screws from the lower steering column cover.
  8.  
  9. Carefully remove the upper steering column cover.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the spiral spring for the horn and SRS air bag inside the column cover.

  15. Loosen and if necessary remove the hex head fastener for the clamp securing the switches to the steering column.
  16.  
  17. Remove the release handle fasteners and remove the release handle lever.
  18.  
  19. Carefully slide the steering column switches up the column about 5 / 8 inch (15mm) and pry off their electrical connectors.

  21. Slide the switches up the steering column along with the lower trim cover, taking care to clear the adjustment lever.
  22.  
  23. To separate the switches remove the fasteners from the front of the lower column cover and the fastener on the backside of the turn signal switch.

  25. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:

  27. When installing the switch/lower cover assembly, make sure to have at least an 1 / 8 inch (3mm) gap between the column cover and the steering wheel. If necessary position the switches to achieve a suitable gap.
