Manual Transaxle




NOTE
The hub bearing could be damaged if subjected to the full weight of the vehicle, such as if the vehicle is moved without the halfshafts. If it is absolutely necessary to place the full vehicle weight on the hub bearing, first support the bearing with SST No. 09608-16041.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transaxle fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Be careful not to damage the inner oil seal or the ABS sensor rotor on the halfshaft.



    Negative battery cable. Due to the air bag system, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Both front wheels
     
    Cotter pin, locknut cap, and the hub nut
     
    Undercovers
     
    Speed sensors
     
    Tie rod ball joint from the steering knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm
     
    Halfshaft from the knuckle
     

  6.  
  7. To remove the left side halfshaft, separate the halfshaft from the transaxle.
  8.  
  9. To remove the right side halfshaft perform the following steps:
    NOTE
    Do not damage the oil seal lip.



    Remove the 2 bolts of the center bearing bracket
     
    Pull the halfshaft out together with the center bearing case and the center halfshaft.
     
    Remove the center shaft with the right-hand halfshaft from the transaxle through the bearing bracket.

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Snapring opening side facing downward, on the oiled inboard joint tulip
     
    Left side halfshaft into the transaxle
     
    Right side halfshaft, with the bearing case and center shaft, into the transaxle
     
    Center bearing case (right side).

  3. After installing either halfshaft, check that there is 0.08-0.12 in. (2-3mm) of axial play. Check that the halfshaft is making contact with the pinion shaft and that the halfshaft cannot be pulled out.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Halfshaft into the knuckle
     
    Lower suspension arm to the lower ball joint. Torque the bolt and nuts to 66 ft. lbs. (89 Nm).
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     
    Stabilizer bar link to the lower suspension arm. Torque the nuts to 55 ft. lbs. (74 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     
    Hub nut and washer and tighten to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm)
     
    Negative battery cable
     
    Locknut cap and a new cotter pin.
     
    Speed sensors
     
    Undercover
     

  6.  
  7. Fill the transaxle fluid to the proper level
  8.  
  9. Start the vehicle, check for leaks and repair if necessary.
  10.

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
    NOTE
    The wheel drive shaft nut must not be reused. Replace the wheel drive shaft nut with new nut whenever it is removed.

  7. Remove the cotter pin and lock cap.
  8.  
  9. Remove and discard the wheel drive shaft nut.
  10.  
  11. Release the parking brake.
  12.  
  13. Remove the suspension knuckle.
  14.  
  15. Using J 2619-01 and J 45341 remove the rear wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.
  16.  

To install:


NOTE
Support the wheel drive shaft until it is completely installed.

  1. Position the wheel drive shaft to the differential output shaft.
    NOTE
    Do not damage the differential output shaft oil seal.

  2.  
  3. Carefully align and guide the wheel drive shaft onto the differential output shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel drive shaft fully onto the differential output shaft using light force.
  6.  
  7. Verify that the wheel drive shaft is fully seated on the differential output shaft retaining ring by grasping the inner tripot housing and pulling outward. Do not pull on the wheel drive shaft bar. The wheel drive shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged.
  8.  
  9. Install the suspension knuckle.
  10.  
  11. Set the park brake.
  12.  
  13. Install a NEW wheel drive shaft spindle nut.
  14.  
  15. Slowly tighten the nut in order to draw the wheel drive shaft spindle into the wheel hub and bearing. Tighten the wheel drive shaft spindle nut to 159 ft. lbs. (216 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the lock cap and a new cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the ABS sensor and retaining bolt. Tighten the ABS sensor retaining bolt to 6 ft. lbs. (8 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Release the park brake.
  26.
