Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable. On vehicles equipped with an air bag, wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding.
     
    Wheels
     
    Hub nut
     
    Front stabilizer link
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor
     
    Brake caliper
     
    Rotor
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Lower control arm ball joint
     
    Front halfshaft from the hub, using a mallet to tap it out. Be careful not to damage the boot or speed sensor.

  5. Loosen the nuts on the lower side of the strut assembly. Do not remove at this time.
    NOTE
    Cover the halfshaft boot with a shop rag to protect it from any damage.



    Lower ball joint using a puller
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle from the lower control arm
     
    Knuckle from the strut assembly
     
    Hub
     

  6.  
  7. Clamp the steering knuckle in a vise and remove the dust deflector. Remove the nut holding the steering knuckle to the ball joint. Press the ball joint out of the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the inner axle seal.

  11. Using a Torx® wrench, remove the bolts securing the dust cover.
  12.  
  13. Using hub puller, remove the hub and backing plate from the steering knuckle.

  15. Using a proper sized driver and a press, remove the inner hub race from the axle hub.
  16.  
  17. Using seal removal tool, remove the outer axle seal.
  18.  
  19. Using snapring pliers, remove the snapring from the inner side of the steering knuckle.

  21. Using a proper sized driver and a press, remove the bearing from the steering knuckle. The bearing is pressed from the front of the steering knuckle and is removed through the back of the steering knuckle.

To install:

  1. Perform the following:

  3. Using a proper sized driver and a press, install a new bearing to the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the snapring to the steering knuckle using snapring pliers.
  6.  
  7. Using a seal driver and a hammer, install a new outer oil seal. Apply multipurpose grease to the oil seal lip.
  8.  
  9. Place the dust cover on the steering knuckle. Tighten the bolts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Using a press and a proper sized driver, install the axle hub to the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Attach the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Install a new cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Using a seal driver and a hammer, install a new inner oil seal. Apply multipurpose grease to the oil seal lip.
  16.  
  17. Install the knuckle and hub assembly to the axle and temporarily tighten the axle nut.
  18.  
  19. Connect the knuckle assembly to the lower strut bracket. Temporarily insert the mounting bolts from the rear and install the nuts making sure the matchmarks made earlier are in alignment.
  20.  
  21. Connect the lower ball joint to lower arm.
  22.  
  23. Connect the tie rod end to the knuckle.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the bolts on the lower side of the strut assembly.
  26.  
  27. If equipped, install the ABS speed sensor.
  28.  
  29. Install the brake disc and the caliper.
  30.  
  31. Tighten the axle nut while someone depresses the brake pedal.
  32.  
  33. Install the wheels to the vehicle. Verify that the wheel turns freely.
  34.  
  35. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  36.  
  37. Check alignment.
