Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustment



With Rear Drum Brakes
  1. Remove the drum brake adjuster hole cover.

    Fig. Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate. Hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjusting bolt. Use another screwdriver in order to turn the adjusting bolt. Turn the adjusting bolt down in order to expand the brake shoes until the drum locks. Turn the adjusting bolt up 8 notches in order to adjust the shoes to the proper distance away from the drum.

  3. Insert a screwdriver through the hole in the backing plate. Hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjusting bolt.
  4.  
  5. Use another screwdriver in order to turn the adjusting bolt. Turn the adjusting bolt down in order to expand the brake shoes until the drum locks.
  6.  
  7. Turn the adjusting bolt up 8 notches in order to adjust the shoes to the proper distance away from the drum.
  8.  
  9. Install the adjuster hole cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear center console.

    Fig. Loosen the lock nut (1). Turn the adjusting nut (2) in order to adjust the park brake lever travel. Refer to the Inspection Procedure above.

  13. Loosen the lock nut (1).

  15. Turn the adjusting nut (2) in order to adjust the park brake lever travel. Refer to the Inspection Procedure above.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the lock nut. Tighten the nut to 44.25 inch lbs (5.0 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the rear center console.
  20.  

Removal & Installation



With Rear Disc Brakes
  1. Remove the rear disc (rotor).

  7. Separate the adjuster (15) from the front brake shoe (17).
  8.  
  9. Remove the hold-down spring (16) and the pin (1) from the front shoe.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front shoe.
  12.  
  13. Separate the adjuster from the rear brake shoe (8).
  14.  
  15. Remove the adjuster and the adjuster strut (7).
  16.  
  17. Disassemble the adjuster (10,11,15)
  18.  
  19. Remove the hold-down spring (9) and the pin (2) from the rear shoe.
  20.  
  21. Separate the rear shoe from the park brake shoe lever (6).
  22.  
  23. Remove the rear shoe.

  25. Remove the park brake shoe lever (2) from the park brake cable (1).

  27. Inspect the park brake hardware.

To install :

  1. Apply Jubilate® Lubricant, GM P/N 1050109 (Canadian P/N 5264008), or the equivalent, to the metal contact points on the following components:

    The backing plate (1)
     
    The park brake shoe lever (2)
     
    The adjuster strut (3)
     
    The adjuster (4, 5, 6)
     

  2.  
  3. Assemble the adjuster.
  4.  
  5. Install the park brake shoe lever (2) to the park brake cable (1).
  6.  
  7. Install the park brake shoe lever (6) and the rear shoe (8).
  8.  
  9. Install the pin (2) and the hold-down spring (9) to the rear shoe.
  10.  
  11. Install the adjuster (10,11,15) and the adjuster strut (7) to the rear shoe.
  12.  
  13. Install the front shoe (17).
  14.  
  15. Install the pin (1) and the hold-down spring (16) to the front shoe.
  16.  
  17. Connect the adjuster to the front shoe.
  18.  
  19. Install the tension spring (1).
  20.  
  21. Install the return springs (1, 2).
  22.  
  23. Install the rear disc.
  24.  
  25. Adjust the park brake.
  26.  

With Rear Drum Brakes

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.
