Shock Absorbers

Removal & Installation



All-Wheel Drive
  1. Remove the rear compartment trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear accessory panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear storage compartment.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tool storage compartment.

  9. Remove the shock absorber fastener access panel (1).
  10.  
  11. Raise and support the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Use a block of wood and a jack in order to support the lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the nut and the stabilizer shaft link stud from the lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut (4) and the bolt (5).

  19. Remove the 3 bolts (1,3,and 4).
  20.  
  21. Move the front of the lower control arm (2) down and toward the outside of the vehicle.

  23. Remove the shock absorber with the coil spring.
  24.  
  25. Remove the coil spring, if necessary.
  26.  

To install

  1. If you removed the coil spring, install the coil spring.

  3. Install the shock absorber and the 3 nuts (2,3,and 6). Tighten the nuts to 59.0 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    NOTE
     Do not tighten the lower shock absorber nut or bolt. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tire and wheel assemblies before tightening the nut and bolt.

  5. Install the bolt (5) and the nut (4).
  6.  
  7. Install the 3 bolts in order to retain the lower control arm to the body. Tighten the bolts to 47.9 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
    NOTE
     Do not tighten the stabilizer shaft link nut. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tire and wheel assemblies before tightening the nut.

  9. Install the nut and the stabilizer shaft link stud to the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the jack and the block of wood.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Install the shock absorber fastener access panel (1).
  16.  
  17. Install the tool storage compartment.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear storage compartment.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear accessory panel.
  22.  
  23. Install the rear compartment trim panel.
  24.  
  25. Bounce the rear of the vehicle in order to stabilize the suspension.
  26.  
  27. Tighten the lower shock absorber nut (4) and the bolt (5). Tighten the nut and the bolt to 103.3 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  28.  
  29. Tighten the nut to the stabilizer shaft link stud. Tighten the nut to 32.5 ft. lbs. (44 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust if necessary.

FWD
  1. Remove the rear compartment trim panel.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear accessory panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear storage compartment.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tool storage compartment.

  9. Remove the shock absorber fastener access panel (1).
  10.  
  11. Remove the 2 nuts (2,6).
  12.  
  13. Raise and support the vehicle.
  14.  
  15. Use a block of wood and a jack in order to support the rear axle.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolt (3).
  18.  
  19. Remove the nut (5) and the washer (4).
  20.  
  21. Remove the shock absorber with the coil spring.
  22.  
  23. Remove the coil spring, if necessary.
  24.  

To install:

  1. If you removed the coil spring, install the coil spring.
  2.  
  3. Install the shock absorber and the bolt (3). Tighten the bolt to 59.0 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
    NOTE
     Do not tighten the lower shock absorber nut. The weight of the vehicle must be on the tire and wheel assemblies before tightening the nut.

  5. Install the washer (4) and the nut (5).
  6.  
  7. Remove the jack and the block of wood.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Bounce the rear of the vehicle in order to stabilize the suspension.
  12.  
  13. Install the 2 nuts (2,6). Tighten the nuts to 59.0 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the shock absorber fastener access panel (1).
  16.  
  17. Install the tool storage compartment.
  18.  
  19. Install the rear storage compartment.
  20.  
  21. Install the rear accessory panel.
  22.  
  23. Install the rear compartment trim panel.
  24.  
  25. Tighten the lower shock absorber nut (5). Tighten the nut to 59.0 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Measure the wheel alignment. Adjust if necessary.
  28.
