The gear shift lever can be removed after the front floor mat has been lifted and the screws removed that attach the gear shift lever ball housing to the central frame tunnel. After the two retaining screws have been removed, the gear shift lever, ball housing, rubber boot, and spring are removed as a unit. The spring will have to be turned in order to clear the pin. Remove the stop plate, clean all components, and check them for wear.

Installation of the gear shift lever is the reverse of the removal procedure. Replace any worn parts. Be sure that the locating pin is a firm fit, but not overly tight. The spring in the steel ball should be checked for tension and replaced if necessary. When installing the stop plate, be sure that the turned-up ramp is on the right-hand side. Lubricate all parts generously with universal grease. After installation is completed, operate the various gears in order to check ease of movement.

CAUTION
Carefully mark the position of the stop plate and note the position of the turned up ramp at the side of the stop plate. Normally the ramp is turned up and on the right-hand side of the hole.
