Volkswagen Air Cooled 1949-1969 Repair Guide

Steering Gear

The Volkswagen steering gear is filled with transaxle oil and does not need topping up or regular changing. However, on earlier models, it had been recommended that the level of oil in the steering gearbox be kept slightly below the filler plug hole. While periodic topping up and changing are not necessary, the steering gearbox should be checked for the proper oil level at intervals of 3,000 miles in order to ensure that there has been no extensive leakage which might otherwise be overlooked. The steering gear should be lubricated only with SAE 90 hypoid oil and under no circumstance should any other lubricant be used.
