Type 1
  1. Jack up the car and remove the wheel and tire.
  2.  
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4.  
  5. Remove the small disc and spring which secure each shoe to the backing plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two long springs between the two shoes.
  8.  
  9. Remove the shoes from the backing plate.
  10.  
  11. If new shoes are being installed, remove the adjusters in the end of each wheel cylinder and screw the star wheel up against the head of the adjuster. When inserting the adjusters back in the wheel cylinders, notice that the slot in the adjuster is angled and must be positioned as illustrated.

  13. Position new shoes on the backing plate. The slot in the shoes and the stronger return spring must be at the wheel cylinder end.
  14.  
  15. Install the disc and spring which secure the shoe to the backing plate.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake drum and adjust the wheel bearing.
  18.  

Type 2
  1. Remove the brake drum.
  2.  
  3. Pry the rear brake shoe out of the adjuster, as illustrated, and detach the return springs. Remove the forward shoe.
  4.  
  5. If new shoes are to be installed, screw the star wheel up against the head of the adjuster.
  6.  
  7. Install the rear brake shoe.
  8.  
  9. Attach the return spring to the front brake shoe and then to the rear shoe.
  10.  
  11. Position the front brake shoe in the slot of the adjusting screw and lever it into position in the same manner as it was removed. Make sure that the return springs do not touch the brake line between the upper and lower wheel cylinders.
  12.  
  13. Install the brake-drum and adjust the wheel bearings.
