Volkswagen Air Cooled 1949-1969 Repair Guide
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Disconnect the cables at the heat exchangers. The cables are usually held in the flap levers at the heat exchangers with sleeve bolts with 10mm heads and locked with 9mm head nuts.
Remove the cable ends from the sleeve bolts and pull the rubber boots off the cable guide tubes and off the disconnected cables.
Disconnect the cables at the heater controls. They are usually held by pins with cotter pin retainers. You will have to unbolt and pull out the temperature control lever to unfasten the cables on Types 1 and 3 models. On type 2 models, disconnect the cables from the heater control knob, located on the floor for 1949-67 vehicles, or on the dashboard for 1968-69 transporters.
Remove the cables by pulling them out from the heater control side.
Feed new cables into the guide tubes at the heater controls after you have sprayed them completely with silicone to prevent rust and wear.
