All of the Volkswagens covered in this guide are equipped with transaxles, so named because the transmission gears and the axle gears are contained in the same housing. On manual and automatic stick shift VWs, the transmission part of the assembly shares the same hypoid gear oil as the rear axle part. Automatic transaxles use ATF Dexron® in the transmission part, and hypoid gear oil in the rear axle.
All transaxles are mounted in a yoke at the rear of the car and bolt up to the front of the engine.
The transaxle case is constructed of aluminum alloy.
