All tie-rod ends are secured by a nut which holds the tapered tie-rod end stud into a matching tapered hole. There are several ways to remove the tapered stud from its hole after the nut has been removed.

First, there are several types of removal tools available from auto parts stores. These tools include directions for their use. One of the most commonly available tools is the fork-shaped tool, which is a wedge that is forced under the tie-rod end. This tool should be used with caution because instead of removing the tie-rod end from its hole it may pull the ball out of its socket, ruining the tie-rod end.

It is also possible to remove the tie-rod end by holding a heavy hammer on one side of the tapered hole and striking the opposite side of the hole sharply with another hammer. The stud will pop out of its hole.


WARNING
Never strike the end of the tie-rod end stud. It is impossible to remove the tie-rod end in this manner.

Once the tie-rod end stud has been removed, turn the tie-rod end out of the adjusting sleeve. On the pieces of the steering linkage that are not used to adjust the toe-in, the tie-rod end is welded in place and it will be necessary to replace the whole assembly.

When reassembling the steering linkage, never put lubricant in the tapered hole.
