Tire Wear Troubleshooting

  1. Tires wear at both sides of tread.
  2.  
    1. Underinflation for loads carried.
    2.  

  3. Tires wear at center of tread.
  4.  
    1. Overinflation.
    2.  

  5. Spotty or irregular wear at one side of the tread (gouges and/or waves).
  6.  
    1. Wheel assembly out of balance statically and dynamically.
    2.  
    3. Excessive lateral wheel runout.
    4.  
    5. Excessive play in wheel bearings or at king pins.
    6.  

  7. Lightly worn spots at the center of the tread.
  8.  
    1. Static unbalance of wheel and tire.
    2.  
    3. Excessive radial run-out.
    4.  

  9. Isolated flat spots at center of tread.
  10.  
    1. Brakes binding in panic application, or brake drums out of round. Check brakes.
    2.  

  11. Stepped tread wear. (One end of each tread block worn more than the other.)
  12.  
    1. Overloading. Inside of casing should be checked for cracks.
    2.  

  13. Side wear.
  14.  
    1. Incorrect camber.
    2.  
    3. Continual driving on steeply cambered roads.
    4.  
    5. Fast cornering.
    6.  


For best total tire life, it is advisable to rotate all five tires, including the spare, at periodic intervals, say 5,000 miles.
