The coil spring/trailing arm rear suspension system is found on Type 4 and 1980-81 Type 2 (Vanagon) models. Type 1, 1970-79 Type 2 and all Type 3 models are equipped with the diagonal arm rear suspension system, which is covered earlier in this section.

The rear wheels of Type 4 models are independently sprung by means of coil springs and trailing arms. The shock absorbers mount inside the coil springs. Each coil spring and shock absorber mounts between the trailing arm and a sheet metal shock tower. Each trailing arm pivots on a body crossmember.

The rear suspension on 1980-81 Type 2 (Vanagon) models is basically the same as the suspension system used on Type 4 models, except that the shock absorber is not mounted inside the coil spring on the 1980-81 Type 2 models.
