Many 1974 and all later Type 1 VWs with alternators are equipped with integral circuit regulators mounted on the alternators. On all other models, the regulator is mounted separately. Some early model regulators do not have a ground wire; all replacement regulators do. When installing a replacement regulator on an early model vehicle without a ground wire, be sure to attach the ground wire that comes with the replacement regulator.
