REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Type 1, Type 3 and Type 4



  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the fuel from the tank.
  4.  
  5. Detach the fuel line and the wires from the sending unit, after removing the luggage compartment liner.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ventilation hoses from the fuel tank.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the hose clamps on the filler neck hose and remove the hose.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolts from the four fuel tank retaining plates. Lift off the retaining plates and remove the tank from the car.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Type 2 Through 1979 See Figure 1

  1. On all models except the pick-up truck, remove the engine. See Engine And Engine Overhaul for procedures. On 1972 and later models, it is possible to remove the rear panel without removing the engine, but it is a tight squeeze.

  3. If not done already, disconnect the battery cable and drain the fuel from the tank.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws from the bulkhead behind the fuel tank (enclosed models) or from the panels in the lower storage compartment (pick-up truck models).
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the fuel filler hose and all lines and hoses. Plug the fuel lines.
  8.  
  9. Remove the fuel tank hold-down straps and remove the tank toward the engine compartment (enclosed models) or through the lower storage compartment (pick-up trucks).
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Type 2 1980-81

The fuel tank is located behind the front axle assembly. It can be removed from beneath the vehicle after being drained by removing all hoses and wiring, then removing the two braces from beneath the tank and any other retaining bolts.
