Volkswagen Air-Cooled 1970-1981 Repair Guide
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Disconnect the cables at the heat exchangers. The cables are usually held in the flap levers at the heat exchangers with sleeve bolts with 10 mm heads and locked with 9 mm head nuts.
Remove the cable ends from the sleeve bolts and pull the rubber boots off the cable guide tubes and off the disconnected cables.
Disconnect the cables at the heater controls. They are usually held by pins with cotter pin retainers. You will have to unbolt and pull out the temperature control lever to unfasten the cables on Types 1, 3, and 4. On the Type 2, disconnect the cables from the temperature control lever on the dash.
Remove the cables by pulling them out from the heater control side.
Feed new cables into the guide tubes at the heater controls after you have sprayed them completely with silicone to prevent rust and wear.
