Volkswagen Air-Cooled 1970-1981 Repair Guide

Brake cable adjustment is performed at the handbrake lever in the passenger compartment on all vehicles except Type 2 models. There is a cable for each rear wheel and there are two adjusting nuts at the lever. On Type 2 models, adjust from below the vehicle.

To adjust the cable, loosen the locknut. Jack up the rear wheel to be adjusted so that it can be hand spun. Turn the adjusting nut until a very slight drag is felt as the wheel is spun. Then back off on the adjusting nut until the lever can be pulled up three notches on all models except Type 2's, six notches on Type 2 models.

Never pull up on the handbrake lever with the cables disconnected.

  1. Disconnect the cables at the handbrake lever by removing the two nuts which secure the cables to the lever. Pull the cables rearward to remove that end from the lever bracket.
  3. Remove the brake drums and detach the cable end from the lever attached to the rear brake shoe.
  5. Remove the brake cable bracket from the backing plate and remove the cable from the vehicle.
  7. Reverse the removal procedure for installation. Adjust the cable.
