Volkswagen Air-Cooled 1970-1981 Repair Guide
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Remove the wheel and tire.
Remove the nut from the torsion arm stud and slide the lower end of the shock off of the stud.
Remove the nut from the shock absorber shaft at the upper mounting and remove the shock from the vehicle.
The shock is tested by operating it by hand. As the shock is extended and compressed, it should operate smoothly over its entire stroke with an even pressure. Its damping action should be clearly felt at the end of each stroke. If the shock is leaking slightly, the shock need not be replaced. A shock that has had an excessive loss of fluid will have flat spots in the stroke as the shock is compressed and extended. That is, the pressure will feel as though it has been suddenly released for a short distance during the stroke.
Installation is the reverse of Steps 1-3.
