REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Type 1

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wiper bearing nuts as well as the washers. Take off the outer bearing seals.
  6.  
  7. On 1973-80 Super Beetle and convertible models, remove the screws holding the cover of the fresh air box in the luggage compartment, remove the cover and remove the plastic rain cover, if necessary. On all other models, remove the back of the instrument panel from the luggage compartment.
  8.  
  9. On all models except 1973-80 Super Beetles and Convertibles, remove the fresh air box/rain drain by removing the three screws at the top and the nut at the bottom; next remove the glove box and the right side air vent.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the wiper motor wiring harness and remove the screw which secures the wiper frame to the body.
  12.  
  13. Remove the frame and motor with the linkage.
  14.  

The ball joints at the ends of the linkage may be slipped apart by gently popping the ball and socket apart with a small prytool. Always lubricate the joints upon reassembly.

  1. Remove the lock and spring washers from the motor driveshaft and remove the connecting rod. Matchmark the motor and frame to ensure proper realignment when the motor is reinstalled.

  3. Remove the nut located at the base of the motor driveshaft, and remove the motor from the frame.
  4.  
  5. To install, reverse the above steps and heed the following reminders.
  6.  
  7. The pressed lug on the wiper frame must engage the groove in the wiper bearing. Make sure that the wiper spindles are perpendicular to the plane of the windshield.
  8.  
  9. Check the linkage bushings for wear.
  10.  
  11. The hollow side of the links must face toward the frame with the angled end of the driving link toward the right bearing.
  12.  
  13. The inner bearing seal should be placed so that the shoulder of the rubber molding faces the wiper arm.
  14.  

Type 2

  1. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Remove both wiper arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bearing cover and nut.
  6.  
  7. Remove the heater branch connections under the instrument panel.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the wiper motor wiring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper motor securing screw and remove the motor.
  12.  
  13. Reverse the above steps to install.
  14.  

Type 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ashtray and glove compartment.
  4.  
  5. Remove the fresh air controls.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cover for the heater and water drainage hoses.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the motor wiring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the wiper arms.
  12.  
  13. Remove the bearing covers and nuts, washers, and outer bearing seals.
  14.  
  15. Remove the wiper motor securing screws and remove the motor.
  16.  
  17. Reverse the above steps to install.
  18.  

Type 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wiper arms.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bearing cover and remove the nut under it.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering column cover and the hoses running between the fresh air control box and the vents.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clock but do not disconnect the wiring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left fresh air and defroster vent. Disconnect the air hose from the vent.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the wiring for the motor at the windshield wiper switch. Remove the ground wire from the motor gear cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the motor securing screw and remove the motor frame and motor assembly downward and to the right.
  16.  
  17. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
