Removal & Installation




WARNING
The speaker grills are attached to the door panel and cannot be removed without removing the door panel.

Dash Mounted

Dash mounted speakers can be accessed after removing the appropriate trim panel. These panels are usually retained by screws and clips. Be sure you have removed all of the attaching screws before prying the panel from the dash. Do not use excessive force on the panel as this will only lead to damage. Once the panel has been removed, loosen the speaker attaching bolts/screws, then pull the speaker from the dash and unplug the electrical connection.

  1. If the speaker grille is secured with fasteners, remove the fasteners.
  2.  
  3. If the speaker grille is a snap fit into the dash assembly, carefully remove the speaker grille using a plastic prytool, or protect the trim with a paint stirring stick or wooden ruler and use a suitable prytool to remove the grille.
  4.  
  5. If the speaker is secured with fasteners, remove the fasteners.
  6.  
  7. If the speaker is a snap fit into the dash assembly, carefully remove the speaker using a plastic prytool, or protect the trim with a paint stirring stick or wooden ruler and use a suitable prytool to remove the speaker.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the speaker's electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Door & Panel Mounted

Fig. Pull the speaker from the door by the edges only. Do not touch the poly-coated paper cone with your fingers. Doing so can cause speaker driver damage.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove any necessary paneling to gain access to the speaker.
  4.  
  5. Remove the protective mesh grill if applicable.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the speaker mounting screws.
  8.  
  9. Pull the speaker partially up, then detach the electrical connector.
  10.  
  11. Remove the speaker from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.
  2.  

Door Mounted

If the speaker is mounted in/on the door panel, the door panel must be removed to access the speaker.

  1. Remove the door panel. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Interior, Door Panels.
  2.  
  3. If the speaker is retained with self tapping Phillips screws, remove the mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. If the speaker is retained with rivets, drill out the rivets.
  6.  
  7. Partially remove the speaker then disconnect the speaker's electrical connector.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in reverse order of removal. On units with riveted speakers, make sure to use the proper fitting rivets.

Mirror Trim Mounted Speakers

Some models use a mirror trim mounted High-range (tweeter) speaker as part of the entertainment system. To access these speakers proceed as follows.

  1. Remove the door panel. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Interior, Door Panels.
  2.  
  3. Using a suitable pry tool, preferably a soft plastic trim removal tool, release the top of the trim from the door frame.
  4.  
  5. Then release the pressed in bottom trim fasteners and remove the trim assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the speaker wiring and remove the insulation to access the speaker.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Rear Speakers

Removing the rear speakers involves basically the same procedure as the front speakers. Remove the appropriate trim panel, then remove the speaker. The rear speakers on some models can be accessed from inside the trunk.
