Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  4.  
  5. Remove the bolts/nuts securing the outer ends of the sway bar, then remove the bolts/nuts securing the brackets.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sway bar.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Position the sway bar in the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the bolts/nuts securing the brackets. Tighten them until just snug (they will be fully tightened later).
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts/nuts securing the outer ends of the sway bar. Tighten until just snug (they will be fully tightened later).
  6.  


NOTE
On Golf and Jetta models, the collars of the washers face away from the bushings. The conical side of the bushings face the washers.

  1. Install the wheels, then lower the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Bounce the vehicle several times and allow the vehicle to stabilize.
  4.  
  5. On Jetta and Golf models, tighten the bolts/nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). On other models, tighten the bolts/nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jackstands.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower engine shield.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sway bar to control arm ling mounting nuts and remove the link.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sway bar bushing brackets.
  10.  
  11. Remove the sway bar.
  12.

To install:

  1. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:

  3. Position the sway bar in the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolts/nuts securing the brackets. Tighten them until just snug (they will be fully tightened later).
  6.  
  7. Install the sway bar-to-control arm link with the arrows facing forward.
  8.  
  9. Then tighten the fasteners to:

    Sway bar link-to-sway bar: 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
     
    Sway bar link-to-control arm: 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm)
     
    Sway bar bushing bracket: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
