Multi-Function (Combination) Switches

Removal & Installation



  1. If necessary, make sure you have the radio code.
  2.  
  3. Place the steering wheel in the center (wheels straight ahead) position.
  4.  
  5. Disarm the SRS system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the negative battery cable is disconnected.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  10.  
  11. Remove trim for steering column switch and slip ring or Steering Angle Sensor if installed.
  12.  
  13. Unfasten the bolt from the steering column switch and remove steering column switch.

To install:

  1. Install the trim for steering column switch and the steering column switch
  2.  
  3. Install the steering wheel and air bag unit.
    CAUTION
    Make sure there are no occupants in the vehicle before connecting the battery cable.

  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then check for proper SRS operation.
  6.  

  1. If necessary, make sure you have the radio code.
  2.  
  3. Place the steering wheel in the center (wheels straight ahead) position.
  4.  
  5. Disarm the SRS system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the negative battery cable is disconnected.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  10.  
  11. Remove two Phillips-head screws, then remove the upper steering column switch trim.

  13. Remove the four Phillips-head screws.
  14.  
  15. Remove the socket head hex bolts.
  16.  
  17. Release the steering wheel height adjustment.
  18.  
  19. Remove the lower steering column switch trim.

  21. Remove the socket head bolt.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect electrical connectors from steering column switches.
  24.  
  25. Remove steering column switches.

  27. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

  29. Install the steering wheel and air bag unit.
    CAUTION
    Make sure there are no occupants in the vehicle before connecting the battery cable.

  31. Connect the negative battery cable, then check for proper SRS operation.
  32.  

  1. If necessary, make sure you have the radio code.

  3. Place the steering wheel in the center (wheels straight ahead) position.
  4.  
  5. Disarm the SRS system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
  6.  
  7. Make sure the negative battery cable is disconnected.

  9. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  10.  
  11. Unscrew 2 Phillips-head bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove upper trim for steering column switches.

  15. Unscrew the four mounting bolts.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hex socket head bolt.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the height adjustment for steering wheel.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower trim for steering column switch.

  23. Remove the socket head bolt.
  24.  
  25. Disconnect harness connectors from the steering column switch.
    WARNING
    The airbag spiral spring/return spring with slip ring stays on the steering column switch. Make sure it does not get twisted out of the center position.

  27. Remove the steering column switches.

To install:

  1. Attach the steering column switch to the steering column, but do not fasten yet.
  2.  
  3. Attach the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Refer to the illustration and secure the steering column switch (2) to the steering column using the socket head screw (3), and maintain a gap dimension to steering wheel (1) of 3mm (a).

  7. Remove steering wheel again and proceed with the installation procedure.
  8.  
  9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.  

Turn Signal (Combination) Switch
  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Center the steering wheel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the air bag. As always follow all safety precautions.
  6.  
  7. Remove the screws holding the steering column trim.
  8.  
  9. Detach the steering column trim covers.
  10.  
  11. Remove fasteners that are holding the switches to the column.
  12.  
  13. Pull the switches away from the steering column and remove the wiring.
  14.  

To install:

  1. Installation of the steering column switches is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  

  1. Disarm the SRS system, as outlined in the Chassis Electrical System.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering wheel, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove trim for steering column switch and slip ring or Steering Angle Sensor if installed.
  6.  
  7. Unfasten the bolt from the steering column switch and remove steering column switch.

  3. Install the steering wheel and air bag unit.

  23. Remove the socket head bolt.

  7. Remove steering wheel again and proceed with the installation procedure.

  9. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  10.  

Turn Signal/Hi-Low Beam/Wiper Switch

CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SRS. Handling of the SRS components requires extreme care. Special tools are also required. If in doubt, see a qualified service technician to ensure proper removal and installation of air bag system components.

  1. Remove the SRS air bag assembly, then the steering wheel. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Steering Wheel, Removal and Installation.
  2.  
  3. Remove the Phillips fasteners near the outer edges of the lower column cover, and then remove the upper cover by carefully lifting it upward.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hex bolt from the lower left side of the lower column cover, and then remove the Phillips fasteners from the lower right and the front of the cover.
  6.  
  7. Fully release the column height adjustment lever and dislodge the lower trim cover and lower it.
  8.  
  9. Loosen the hex head bolt securing the switches, then disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the switches.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in reverse order of removal.
  12.
