Clearing Codes

Control module reset procedures are a very important part of OBD II System diagnostics. This step should be done at the end of any fault code repair and at the end of any drive-ability repair.

Clearing codes can be performed by any of the methods below:

Clear the control module memory with the Generic Scan Tool (GST)

Clear the control module memory with the vehicle manufacturer's specific tester

Turn the ignition OFF and remove the negative battery cable for at least 1 minute.

Removing the negative battery cable may cause other systems in the vehicle to loose their memory. Prior to removing the cable, ensure you have the proper reset codes for radios and alarms.

NOTE
The MIL will may also be de-activated for some codes if the vehicle completes 3 consecutive trips without a fault detected with vehicle conditions similar to those present during the fault.

The VAG1551/VAG1552 scan tool, with VAG1551/3 adapter cable, is required to erase the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the ECM memory.

  1. Connect the scan tool to the diagnostic connector and press buttons '0' and '1' to insert 'Engine Electronics: Address Word 01' (engine running at idle).
  2.
  3. Press buttons '0' and '2' to select 'Check DTC Memory: Function 02'.
  4.
  5. Press the 'Q' button to confirm input.
  6.
  7. Press the button to advance through program sequence until all stored malfunctions have been displayed.
  8.
  9. Press buttons '0' and '5' to select 'Erase DTC Memory: Function 05'.
  10.
  11. Press the 'Q' button to confirm input.
  12.
  13. Press the button to advance through program sequence.
  14.
  15. Press buttons '0' and '6' to select 'End Output: Function 06'.
  16.
  17. Press the 'Q' button to confirm input.
  18.
  19. Road test the vehicle to ensure all problems have been repaired.
  20.
  21. Initiate the 'Automatic Test Sequence' by pressing the '0' button twice to insert 'Address Word 00'.
  22.
  23. Check the readiness code. If the DTC memory has been erased, or ECM has been disconnected, generate a readiness code.
  24.

With Diagnostic Tester

For both engine and automatic transaxle, after all fault codes have been retrieved, select Function 05 and press the Q button to enter the selection. The memory will be erased only if all fault codes have been retrieved. Test drive the vehicle for at least 10 minutes, including at least 1 full throttle application above 3000 rpm. Check the fault code memory again to make sure all faults have been repaired.

Without Diagnostic Tester
  1. To erase codes, wait until Code 4444 or 0000 is displayed.
  2.
  3. Turn ignition switch OFF and connect jumper wire to diagnostic connectors again.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition switch ON and leave connectors jumpered for about 5 seconds, When Code 4444 or 0000 appears the codes will be erased.
  6.
  7. Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove jumper wire.
  8.
