Removal & Installation



The A2 (1990-92 Golf and Jetta) and A3 (1993-99 Golf and Jetta / 1995-99 Cabriolet) chassis may have been equipped with a rear sway bar from the factory, although it is not removable because it is an integral part of the rear axle.

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the sway bar link fasteners.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sway bar bushing bracket fasteners and remove the sway bar.
  10.  
  11. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following:

  13. Replace the fasteners and torque as follows:

1998-00 Passat Models



Sway bar bushing bracket-to-subframe (replace): 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm)
 
Sway bar link-to-sway bar (replace): 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
 
Sway bar link-to-bearing housing (replace): 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
 

A4 Models



Sway bar bushing bracket-to-subframe (replace): 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
 
Sway bar link-to-sway bar (replace): 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm)
 
Sway bar link-to-bearing housing (replace): 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
