Removal & Installation



Please consult the coil spring procedure listed under front suspension section of this chapter.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the strut from the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Clamp the Spring Compressor VAG 1752/2 or equivalent in a vise.
  6.  
  7. Install the strut into the spring compressor.
  8.  
  9. Pry off the mounting bolt cap.
  10.  
  11. Compress the coil spring and remove the self-locking nut from the piston rod.
  12.  
  13. Matchmark the position of the spring retainer and spring mount.
  14.  
  15. Remove:

    Spring seat and related components noting the order of removal.
     
    Strut from the spring compressor.
     
    Spring out of the compressor.

To install:

  1. Install the new spring into the compressor.
  2.  
  3. Compress the spring and insert the strut through the spring.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring seat and related components in the reverse order as they were removed and aligning the matchmarks.
  6.  
  7. Install a new self-locking nut.
  8.  
  9. Reinstall the mounting bolt cap.
  10.  
  11. Release the spring compressor and install the strut into the vehicle.

NOTE
For coil spring replacement on models equipped with rear strut assemblies, please refer to the front coil spring removal procedures.

Front Wheel Drive Models

The 1998-00 Passat Front Wheel Drive (FWD) models are the only models covered in this manual that Do NOT use a strut assembly for the rear wheels

  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle until the upper rear shock mounting bolts are accessible and remove the mounting bolts.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. With the help of an assistant, pull the rear axle downward and withdraw the spring.
  8.  
  9. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following procedure and torque specifications:

    Upper shock mount-to-body: 33ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
