Removal & Installation




NOTE
This procedure requires the use of the following special tools, or their equivalents:



Torque wrench V.A.G1332
 
Open-end wrench (spanner insert (34mm) V.A.G 1332/5

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Removing the torsion bar, as outlined in this section.
  6.  
  7. Unbolt both shock absorbers from the control arm and completely slide upward.
  8.  
  9. Remove the coupling rods from lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Unbolt the tie rods from the steering gear.

  13. Remove the front exhaust pipe

  15. On vehicles with reinforced stabilizer (27mm in diameter), perform the following:
    1. Unfasten the bolt from the universal joint at steering pinion, then remove the steering gear from steering column.
    2.  
    3. Unbolt the steering gear from the subframe.
    4.

  17. Unscrew the stabilizer clamp from the subframe.
  18.  
  19. Rotate the stabilizer bar upward about 90°, then pull it out toward left at the same time. Check the right coupling rod when removing stabilizer bar.

  21. Remove the front drive axle tube on vehicles with all wheel drive

To install:

  1. Installation is in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
    1. Make sure the surface is not damaged when installing the stabilizer. If necessary, repair any paint damage and protect against corrosion using a suitable underbody sealer.
    2.  
    3. Coupling rods stay on the stabilizer bar during removal and installation.
