Camshaft (Valve) Cover

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Except 16-Valve Engines

See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the throttle cable, crankcase ventilation hose and any other components in the way.
  4.

  1. Remove the nut at the front of the upper camshaft belt cover. If necessary, remove the cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the nuts securing the cover, then lift the cover from the engine.
  4.

  1. Discard the old gaskets. This is also a good time to clean the inside of the camshaft cover and oil baffle plate of any sludge deposits.
  2.

To install:
  1. Install the cover on the engine. Use a new gasket without using any additional sealer. Torque the nuts to 87 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Connect the throttle cable and any other components necessary. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  6.  

16-Valve Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the spark plug wires and the intake air duct.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the wiring and vacuum lines from the throttle body.
  6.  
  7. Remove the support bracket and the 5 nuts to remove the upper intake manifold.
  8.  
  9. Remove the bolts securing the camshaft cover, then remove the cover.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Install the cover. Use a new gasket without using any additional sealer. Torque the cover bolts to 87 inch lbs. (10 Nm)
  2.  
  3. Install the intake manifold with a new gasket and tighten the nuts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect all other wires/cables/hoses.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.
