INSPECTION

4-Cylinder Engines

See Figures 1 and 2

  1. With the oil pump on the bench and the bottom cover removed, insert a feeler gauge between the gear teeth. A new pump will have 0.002 inch (0.05mm) clearance, the wear limit is 0.008 inches (0.20mm).
  2.

Fig. Fig. 1: Checking the pump gear backlash

  1. Place a straight edge across the gears and the pump housing. Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between the gears and the straight edge. The axial play of the gears should be no more than 0.004 inches (0.15mm).

  1. The pressure relief valve is in the lower housing. Note position of the piston when removing.
  2.
  3. Service parts for VW oil pumps are not available. If the measurements do not meet specification, replace the pump.
  4.

5-Cylinder Engines
  1. At the rear of the oil pump, remove the end cover bolts and the cover. Check the cover for scoring or other damage. If necessary, replace it.
  2.
  3. Check the pump gears for wear and/or damage, replace the parts if necessary. Remove the pressure relief valve, clean it in solvent and check the relief spring for wear. Torque the relief valve to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  4.

Install the pump gears with the marks facing the end cover.

  1. Pack the pump with petroleum jelly, then reassemble.
  2.

INSTALLATION

4-Cylinder Engines
  1. Position the oil pump and a new gasket onto the block. Install the mounting bolts. Torque the long bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and the short one to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  2.
  3. Install the oil pan.
  4.

5-Cylinder Engines
  1. Mount the oil pump with a new gasket to the block and install the mounting bolts. Torque the pump-to-engine bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  2.
  3. Attach the oil pump pick-up tube to the pump using new gaskets. Torque the mounting bolts to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  4.
  5. Install the oil pan.
  6.
  7. Refill the engine with oil.
  8.
  9. Install the drive belt sprocket onto the crankshaft.
  10.
  11. Install the drive belt and drive belt covers.
  12.
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
