RECONDITIONING

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

Valve seats cannot be replaced but can be refaced with either grinding stones or cutting tools. There is a limit to how much material can be removed. To determine how much of the seat can be cut on Quantums equipped with 4-cylinder CIS-E (1.8L) engines and 1985-89 Jetta, Golf, GTI, Scirocco, Cabriolet and Fox:

  1. Insert the valve and make sure it is flat against the seat.
  2.
  3. Place a straight edge across the valve cover gasket surface. Make sure the surface is clean and all gasket material is removed.
  4.
  5. Measure the distance from the straight edge to the valve stem.
  6.
  7. The final measurement after cutting the valve seat must be no less than the following dimensions. If not, the cylinder head must be replaced.

    8-valve gasoline engines: Intake-1.331 in. (33.8mm) Exhaust-1.343 in. (34.1mm)

    16-valve engines: Intake-1.354 in. (34.4mm) Exhaust-1.366 in. (34.7mm)

    Diesel engines: Intake-1.409 in. (35.8mm) Exhaust-1.421 in. (36.1mm)

To determine how much of the seat can be cut on Quantums equipped with 5-cylinder CIS/CIS-E and 4-cylinder CIS (1.7L) engines and 1974-84 Dasher, Rabbit, Scirocco and Jetta:

  1. Invert the cylinder head so that the combustion chambers are facing upwards, then insert the valves in the head.
  2.
  3. Place a straight edge across cylinder head surface. Make sure the surface is clean and all gasket material is removed.
  4.
  5. Measure the distance from the straight edge to the valve.
  6.
  7. The final measurement after cutting the valve seat must not be greater than the following dimensions. If not, the cylinder head must be replaced.

    Gasoline engines, except 1.8L JH engines: Intake-0.354 in. (9mm) Exhaust-0.378 in. (9.6mm)

    1.8L JH engines: Intake-0.362 (9.2mm) Exhaust-0.378 in. (9.6mm)

Diesel engines: Intake and Exhaust-0.059 in. (1.5mm)
