Volkswagen Front Wheel Drive 1974-1989 Repair Guide

Some brake pads may contain asbestos, which has been determined to be a cancer causing agent. Never clean the brake surfaces with compressed air! Avoid inhaling any dust from any brake surface! When cleaning brake surfaces, use a commercially available brake cleaning fluid.

There are four types of disc brake calipers used on these Volkswagens. Refer to the illustrations to help identify the type used on your car.

Some 1985 and later Golf and Jettas use a Mark II front brake caliper. The wheel bearing housing is designed to form an integral part of the brake assembly, thus making removal and replacement of the brake pads simpler. Removal and installation of the Mark II style caliper and the brake pads are similar to the procedure for the Kelsey-Hayes floating type caliper.
