REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Models Through 1977

See Figure 1

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater box following the procedure outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. On Rabbit and Scirocco, remove the screws holding the heater cover in place, then remove the heater cover. Remove the circular cutoff flap by unhooking it from its hinge. On Dashers, remove the heater cover by pulling out its pins.
  6.  
  7. On the Rabbit and Scirocco, the heater blower should pull right out of the assembly.
  8.  
  9. On Dashers, remove the clips holding the heater box halves together and separate the halves. The fan should just pull out.

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  2.  

On the Dasher, when installing the fan in the heater box halves, make sure the wiring connections on the fan face the wiring harness on the heater box. Also, when joining the housing halves, make sure there is no side to side play in the blower motor.

1978 and Later Models, Except Fox and 1985-89 Golf/Jetta
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the heater box following the procedure outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the screws holding the cover on the heater box, then remove the cover. Remove the blower motor cover, if so equipped.
  6.  
  7. After matchmarking to insure you assemble them in the correct order, unplug the electrical connections from the blower motor.
  8.  
  9. Remove the clamp or screws holding the motor in place, then remove the motor.
  10.  
  11. Installation is the reverse of removal.
  12.  

Fox

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the front cover sealing gasket.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water deflector.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the fresh air housing cover retaining clips, then remove the front fresh air housing cover.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with air conditioning, undo the lock and disconnect the air distribution flap levers.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear fresh air housing cover.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with air conditioning, label and disconnect the vacuum servo motor hoses and hoses from the grommets in the lower portion of the fresh air housing covers.

  1. Remove the thermal resistor and thermal circuit breaker from the support.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the blower motor mounting screw and disconnect the blower wiring connectors.
  4.  
  5. Remove the lower fresh air covers.
  6.  
  7. Maneuver the fan and motor towards the front of the car, then remove it from the fresh air (blower) housing.
  8.  

To install:
  1. Install the fan and motor assembly into the fresh air (blower) housing.
  2.  
  3. Install the lower fresh air covers.
  4.  
  5. Connect the blower wiring and install the blower motor mounting screw.
  6.  
  7. Attach the thermal circuit breaker and thermal resistor to the support.
  8.  
  9. Connect the hoses to the lower fresh air housing covers and connect the vacuum servo motor hoses.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear fresh air housing cover.
  12.  
  13. If equipped with air conditioning, connect the air distribution flap levers and engage the lock.
  14.  
  15. Install the front fresh air housing cover and lock the retaining clips.
  16.  
  17. Install the water deflector.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable and check the blower operation at all speeds.
  20.  

1985-89 Golf and Jetta

See Figures 3, 4 and 5

The blower motor is located behind the glove box and it may be necessary to remove the glove box to gain access to the motor.

WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the wires at the blower motor.
  4.  
  5. At the blower motor flange near the cowl, disengage the retaining lug (pull down on the lug).
  6.  
  7. Turn the motor in the clockwise direction to release it from its mount, then lower it from the plenum.
  8.  
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Use a new gasket or sealant as required.
  10.  

WITH AIR CONDITIONING

See Figures 6, 7, 8 and 9

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the wires and the motor vent tube from the blower motor.
  4.

  1. Remove the three mounting screws and pull the motor from the plenum.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedures. Use a new gasket or sealant as required.
