Instrument Cluster

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Dasher

See Figure 1

THROUGH 1977
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Unscrew the speedometer cable from the rear of the cluster.
  4.  
  5. Using needle-nosed pliers, detach the retaining springs on either side of the cluster.
  6.  
  7. Pivot the instrument cluster out of the dash.
  8.  
  9. Disengage the multi-connector plug at the rear of the cluster.
  10.  
  11. Remove the cluster from the dash.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Support the cluster and engage the multi-plug connector.
  2.  
  3. Mount the cluster to the dash and connect the side cluster retaining springs.
  4.  
  5. Connect the speedometer cable to the speedometer at the rear of the cluster.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.

1978 AND LATER
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the radio or shelf.
  4.  
  5. Pull the knobs off the fresh air control and fan switch.
  6.  
  7. Remove the six instrument cluster-to-dashboard retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Snap out the light, emergency flasher and rear window defogger switches.
  10.  
  11. Disengage the air fan switch electrical connector.
  12.  
  13. Remove the instrument cluster, then disconnect the speedometer cable and the multi-point connector from the back of the cluster.
  14.  

To install:
  1. Support the cluster, then connect the multi-point plug and speedometer cable to the rear of the cluster.
  2.  
  3. Plug in the air fan switch connector.
  4.  
  5. Push the rear window defogger, emergency and light switches into the cluster.
  6.  
  7. Install the cluster-to-dash retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Mount the fan switch and fresh air control knobs.
  10.  
  11. Mount the radio or shelf.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery cable.
  14.  

1975-81 Scirocco and Pre-1985 Rabbit and Jetta
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the fresh air controls trim plate.
  4.  
  5. Remove the radio and glove box.
  6.  
  7. Unscrew the speedometer drive cable from the back of the speedometer. Detach the electrical plug.
  8.  
  9. Remove the attaching screw inside the radio/glove box opening.
  10.  
  11. Remove the instrument cluster.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Mount the instrument cluster and install the attaching screw through the radio/glove box opening.
  2.  
  3. Connect the electrical plug and speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Install the radio and glove box.
  6.  
  7. Mount the fresh air controls trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

1982-84 Scirocco
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the two Phillips head screws on the inner top surface of the instrument compartment.
  4.  
  5. Start to pull down on the instrument cluster and remove the screws in the top of the cluster.
  6.  
  7. Tip out the top of the instrument cluster.
  8.  
  9. Remove the speedometer cable by twisting the tabs of the plastic fixture around the end of the cable. On some vehicles, the speedometer cable is attached by a nut.
  10.  
  11. Unplug the multi-point connector, then remove instrument cluster.
  12.  

To install:
  1. Support the cluster and connect the multi-point plug connector.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Mount the cluster and install the lower retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the two Phillips head screws on the inner top surface of the instrument compartment.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  

Quantum
  1. Disconnect battery ground strap.
  2.  
  3. Carefully pry off switch trim below instruments.
  4.  
  5. Pull the heater control knobs off and press out the heater control trim.
  6.  
  7. Remove the Phillips head screws holding heater control trim to panel.
  8.  
  9. Remove the Phillips screws around perimeter of instrument cluster.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect all wiring to switches and warning lamps. Remove all trim panels.
  12.  
  13. Start to pull down on the instrument cluster and remove the screws in the top of the cluster.
  14.  
  15. Tip out the top of the instrument cluster.
  16.  
  17. Remove the speedometer cable by twisting the tabs of the plastic fixture around the end of the cable. On some vehicles, the speedometer cable is attached by a nut.
  18.  
  19. Unplug the multi-point connector and remove instrument cluster.
  20.  

To install:
  1. Support the cluster and connect the multi-point plug connector.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Mount the cluster and install the lower retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the two Phillips head screws on the inner top surface of the instrument compartment.
  8.  
  9. Install the trim panels and connect all switch wiring.
  10.  
  11. Install the Phillips heads screws around the cluster perimeter.
  12.  
  13. Install the heater control-to-trim panel screws.
  14.  
  15. Press in the heater control trim and mount the heater control knobs.
  16.  
  17. Mount the lower instrument trim.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  

1985-89 Golf, Fox, Jetta, Scirocco and Cabriolet

See Figure 2

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Pull off all of the temperature control knobs and levers.
  4.  
  5. Unclip the control lever trim plate, unplug the electrical connectors and remove the plate.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining screws and the instrument panel trim plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the retaining screws and pull out the instrument panel.
  10.  
  11. Squeeze the clips on the speedometer cable head and remove the cable from the instrument cluster.

  1. Unplug all of the vacuum hose and the electrical connections.
  2.  

To install:
  1. Support the cluster, then engage the electrical and vacuum connections.
  2.  
  3. Connect the speedometer cable.
  4.  
  5. Mount the instrument panel and install the panel retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Install the trim plate with retaining screws.
  8.  
  9. Install the control lever trim plate and plug in the electrical connectors. Secure the plate with the clip.
  10.  
  11. Mount the temperature control knobs and levers.
  12.  
  13. Connect the battery cable.
  14.
