Volkswagen Front Wheel Drive 1974-1989 Repair Guide

Volkswagen's official Vehicle Identification Label is usually mounted somewhere in the luggage compartment, usually on the rear panel or under the carpet. On some models, it may also be found on the crossmember above the grille. It is separate from the federal VIN plate required on all vehicles. The label includes the VIN, a model code, engine and transaxle codes, paint and interior codes and option code numbers. Since the manufacturer sometimes makes production changes in mid-model year, this information is often the most useful when locating parts.
