REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise the vehicle and support with jackstands.
  4.
  5. Remove the rear wheels. Remove the brake drums or the caliper and rotor depending on the vehicle.
  6.
  7. Disconnect the brake hoses and parking brake cables. Plug the hydraulic hoses after disconnecting. Disconnect the ABS wheel sensors if so equipped.
  8.
  9. Use a jack to support the axle.
  10.
  11. Remove the strut-to-axle bolts and allow the axle to rest on the jack.
  12.
  13. Remove the bolts at the axle bushing and lower the axle using the jack.
  14.

To install:
  1. Install the axle, but do not tighten the bushing bolts yet. They should be torqued with the vehicle on the ground to properly align the bushings.
  2.
  3. Connect the brake lines, cables and wires.
  4.
  5. Install the brake drums or calipers.
  6.
  7. Bleed the brake system, install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle.
  8.
  9. With the vehicle on the ground, torque the right side axle bushing bolt first. Pry the left side bushing slightly towards the center of the vehicle, then tighten the left side. Torque the bolts to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) on the Quantum and Dasher or to 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) on other models.
  10.
  11. Connect the battery cable.
  12.
