Strut Assembly

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Fox, Rabbit (Except Pick-Up), Scirocco, Jetta and Golf

See Figures 1, 2 and 3

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support it on jackstands. Support the axle with a floor jack, but do not put any pressure on the springs.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cap/rubber guard from inside the trunk/hatch area of the car.
  6.

  1. Remove the nut, washer and mounting disc.

  1. Unbolt the strut assembly from the rear axle and remove it.
  2.

To install:
  1. Position the strut assembly on the car. On Fox models, use a new top mount bolt. Tighten the top mount bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) on Fox, 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) on 1985-89 Golf and Jetta and 23 ft. lbs. (29 Nm) on other models. Tighten the bottom bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm) on Fox, 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) on 1985-89 Golf and Jetta and 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm) on other models.
  2.  
  3. Install the cap/rubber guard.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.  

Quantum
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise the car and support it on jackstands. Support the axle with a floor jack, but do not put any pressure on the springs.
  4.  
  5. Remove strut cover from inside the car.
  6.  
  7. Using tool 3017A, remove the self-locking nut securing the strut to the body.
  8.  
  9. Unbolt the strut from the axle, then remove it from the vehicle.
  10.  

To install:
  1. Position the strut assembly on the car. Use a new self-locking nut. Tighten it to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the bottom bolt to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the strut cover from inside the car.
  4.  
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the battery cable.
  8.  

OVERHAUL



See Figures 4 and 5

A spring compressor is necessary for this operation.

  1. Clamp the strut in a vise. Do not overtighten, as this could damage the strut.
  2.  
  3. Attach the spring compressor, then carefully use it to compress the spring.
  4.  
  5. Remove the slotted nut at the top of the strut, then remove the protective collar and the spring.
  6.

To assemble:
  1. If necessary, transfer the compressor to a new spring. Remember, the compressed spring is under considerable pressure. Relieve the tension slowly.
  2.  
  3. Install the spring and protective collar on the strut.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the slotted nut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm), then carefully remove the spring compressor.
  6.
