On gasoline engines, this number may be stamped either into the engine block near the upper coolant hose fitting, between the fuel pump and distributor or on the left side of the engine block just below the cylinder head. On diesel engines, this code can be found stamped on the engine block between the fuel injection pump and the vacuum pump. The first 2 digits represent the engine code, and will be the most useful description of the engine when locating specifications or ordering parts. Although engines share many components, the code indicates differences in engine management systems, emissions specifications, compression ratios, power ratings and other details. The engine code may also appear in large type on the model identification label.
