REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



Dasher and Quantum

See Figures 1 and 2

Do not remove the wiper drive crank from the wiper motor shaft. If it must be removed for any reason, matchmark the shaft, motor and crank for installation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Unplug the multiconnector from the wiper motor.
  4.  
  5. Remove the motor-to-linkage bracket retaining screws.
  6.  
  7. Carefully pry the motor crank out of the two linkage arms.
  8.  
  9. Remove the motor from the car.
  10.  
  11. Install the motor in the reverse order of removal. The crank arm should be at a right angle to the motor.

Rabbit, Scirocco and Jetta Through 1984

When removing the wiper motor, leave the mounting frame in place. On all models with two front wiper arms, do not remove the wiper drive crank from the motor shaft.

On Sciroccos with one front wiper arm, matchmark the drive crank and motor arm, then remove the arm.

If, for any reason you must remove the wiper drive crank from the motor shaft on two wiper arm models, matchmark both parts for reassembly.

  1. Access is with the hood open. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the connecting rods or motor crank arm from the motor.
  4.  
  5. Pull off the wiring plug.
  6.

  1. Remove the four mounting bolts. You may have to energize the motor for access to the top bolt.

  3. Remove the motor. Reverse the procedure for installation.

1985-89 Golf, Fox, Jetta, Scirocco and Cabriolet

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the cowl cover and seal to access the wiper motor.
  4.  
  5. Unplug the electrical connector to the wiper motor.
  6.

  1. Disconnect the crank arm from the wiper arm assembly. Make a note or drawing of the crank arm installation angle before removing.

  1. If necessary for clearance, remove the retaining nut and the crank arm from the wiper motor shaft.
  2.  
  3. Remove the motor mounting bolts and the motor from the vehicle.
  4.  

To install:
  1. Run the motor and turn it off (it will stop in the PARK position). If necessary, the motor may be connected to the vehicle wiring harness and the battery may be temporarily connected for this.
  2.  
  3. Install the motor.
  4.  
  5. On Golf and Jetta to install the crank arm, raise it 4 degrees from horizontal on the right side and connect it to the motor shaft. On all other models, set the crank at the original angle.
  6.  

  1. To complete the installation, connect the crank arm to the wiper assembly and reverse the removal procedures.
